What a week last week was!
So much information to absorb, digest and add to my repetoire...
Following our graduation ceremony in Tucson, AZ, where I become one of fewer than 35 certified 'money, marketing and soul coaches' with Kendall Summerhawk worldwide, I was invited to give a short speech on stage describing my experience. That's me in the bottom pic with the turquoise jacket.
The last day we heard 3 special guest speakers beginning with James Malenchek (whom I know a few of you know, have heard, or have taken workshops with). He's a very dynamic and enjoyable speaker. And what an offer he presented at the end. I had to control myself or I'd be flying across the country a dozen times next year!
Just to trick you, I'm wearing a brown jacket in the picture with James.

PS -- you won't hear from me for a couple days as I am in the midst of Eben Pagan's "Connected" virtual workshop yesterday and today.
Here I am on vacation with my sister in a yurt in New York state near Ithaca, working on the details of my first tele/webinar entitled: "Go ahead. Give me the 3rd degree." It is peaceful, quiet and my view is a garden with lots of sunfowers and flowering vines.
It's quite a nice place and MUCH, MUCH better than staying in a hotel/motel room hands down! This yurt is approx 30 feet across so it gives quite a bit of living space, a separate dining and living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and a loft perfect for kids. I wouldn't want to stay here in the winter -- although, from the comment book, a lot of people have.
So, back to the tele/webinar: "Go ahead. Give me the 3rd degree." I've allowed for participants to choose between a phone call (costs money and kinks your neck) and a webinar (must be online at the time of session). Personally, I much prefer webinars so I wanted to give that option to people. Originally, I had signed up for the 30 day free trial with GoToMeeting, but since it allows only 15 participants, that didn't make sense for me and what I anticipate. GoToWebinar appears to be a suped-up version of GoToMeeting. It also appears to be quite intuitive. I guess I'll find out NEXT TUESDAY!
So, for my business contacts on this blog, here's the what and why behind the scene stuff.
You already know which provider I chose (after a lot of research). There are many, many free services out there that allow you to host a meeting but you need to read the fine print. Most of them allow only that: you talk, people listen.
GoToWebinar, even the free trial, allows me to have up to 1,000 participants and records the entire session including any visuals I may have (I'm wondering how that works) so that I can upload an audio link later. They provide a link, a good looking template which looks professional and I don't need a database. Mostly, I'm interested in the recording because, in the future, I can use that in many of my marketing concepts. I could burn CDs of it and give them away as 'teasers' to give people a sense of my style and to include in other marketing such as at a health fair.
Listening to the free CD will (1) give people useful information (2) start building a relationship with me which, in turn will (3) build trust which leads to (4) the purchase of a product of service. Think 'funnel of trust' -- VERY important in marketing and in business! A fabulous marketing tool for minimal time input.

No, this headline is not a 'strategy' to trick you into an exercise today. However, now that I think of it, are you holding your head up straight? Or is it, perhaps, chin forward and slouched like a vulture? If so, it would be wise to pay attention -- you wouldn't want to get stuck in that position!
Now, back to what I was here to write...
www.SueCrutcher.com along with my other sites: www.GreystoneRetreat.com and www.Sutopia.com are in the process of being transferred this week so they may be unavailable for a couple days until they repropogate their new DNS address (cool techie talk isn't it? What's amazing, is that I actually have a clue what it means!) During the transfer phase, I have broken down and asked for help (hint, hint to others out there) to rebuild them to professional level. I have found new templates and it looks like it will be money well spent.
Here's the lesson for today: what would you be able to allow someone else to do for you in your business? Something that would take just the tiniest portion of weight and responsibility off of your shoulders? Bear in mind that whoever does this 'job' for you will not likely do it as you would have. They may not be perfect (and, who of us are?) However, the fact that you have freed up some of your time outweighs the lack of perfection (if you think about it, it's not likely it would have been perfect if you did the task either ... oops, did I really say that?)
I've been working on applying this lesson to my life as it is HUGE for me. I'm, like most of you I'm sure, a bit of a control person who expects a lot from myself.
Around the beginning of August I hired someone to help me in the introductory combination role of: office manager, personal assistant and webmaster. She's dedicating between 1 and 2 days a week to me at present and has been given 6 pages of my 'to do' list to take over. That, in itself, was a relief. It took until last week for me to think about the BENEFIT of having her help before I thought about the MONEY it was costing me. Here's what happened (her name is Lynn):
Last week on Tuesday, Lynn and I talked about several things, including what payment gateway and what payment processor to use as well as should I keep AWeber or would one of the payment processors have similar capabilities along with the ability to allow me to provide affiliate links (and, some other web-related stuff).
Wednesday, mid-day, I receive a detailed comparison table via email with tons of live links in it -- the pros and cons of each and a synopsis/suggested choice. Fabulous! She's fast. We talked about how to proceed, how we would handle any payments and setting up of accounts, etc. Then, HERE'S THE GOOD PART, I delegated more tasks for Thursday. When I hung up, I realized what a relief it was to talk to someone else, request what I wanted done and to KNOW that it would get done. Try it. You'll like it.

This week focuses on clearing the clutter of email -- mostly because it's a high priority for me right now. I'm at my 'soft limit' and once I cross it, I cannot receive until the situation is dealt with. It's a bit of a pain, but also a good thing as it forces me (on occasion anyway) to get back on track.
TODAY'S TIP:
Make a RULE for yourself – if you open an e-mail, you MUST respond to it immediately. No ‘setting it aside’ as you and I both know the odds of you coming back to it and actually answering later are close to nil.

Once the surveys are returned to you, go through them and compile a list of the most often mentioned values and emotions. THIS is what you focus on in your advertising – the values and emotions – not a list of services or benefits. A professional photo of you which is a stepping stone in the trust development portion of a future client’s relationship with you is important. We’ll talk about the ‘funnel of trust’ another time. Add a simple tagline, a few credentials and of course, several ways to contact you. You do not need to list all of your services, your detailed price list, detailed mission statement or philosophy. The values, when directed at a specific niche market, will automatically encourage people to contact you for more information, if you have connected with them at an emotional level in your advertising. Emotional connection and alignment with your personal values is imperative. It must be authentic and shared from your soul. Entwine the two within your advertising and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a yellow tulip! How do you determine your values? Try the following exercise; it is similar to what you have asked your clients, but it goes a little deeper. It is personal and unique to you and your experience. Think of a situation at some point in your past where you were extremely happy, content, pleased, empowered or proud of yourself. Now remember how you acted or reacted. List 5 emotion words (happy, thrilled, excited…) and 5 value words (appreciated, honoured, creative …) that you feel are important in this scenario. Next, think of a situation at some point in your past where you were not happy, felt pressured, or were doing something against your better judgment. Again list 5 emotion words (lost, frustrated, coerced …) and 5 MISSING values (respect, honesty, creativity …) in this scenario. Finally, compare the emotion words from both scenarios and list the ones that appear in both; then compare the value words from both scenarios and list the ones that appear in both. These are your key values in those situations. (You do have others – everyone has core values – a professional coach will be able to help you determine what they are.) Now, take the clients’ most mentioned emotions/values and compare them to your personal emotions/values. The emotions/values that appear on both the client list and your personal list are the ones to laser focus on – they are what stir your passion. When you are truly passionate about and focused on what valuable service you offer (notice I did not say: “what you do”) clients will be drawn to you. “Why” does this work? That’s an entirely different article. I’m sure it is obvious that this is a massive topic to attempt to cover in such a short article. When you’re ready for the next step … when you are the red tulip practitioner that is doing particularly well … how do you become the yellow tulip? Approach your business differently than you have traditionally done in the past. ACTION … Set clear, concise and bold goals – then take consistent baby steps to achieve those goals. Without action a goal is useless and non-existent. Initially, determining your goals may be one of your biggest challenges. It is uncomfortable to push your boundaries, to do things differently, to be concerned if those around you will approve of what you are doing. In the beginning, you may not know if you personally approve of what you are doing. It takes time and repetition to be comfortable with change. The more you push your boundaries, the more comfortable you will become doing so. When you are comfortable, it is time to push the boundaries a little further. And so the cycle continues and expands. ASK YOURSELF: “Who are my favourite, long-term clients? Who are the clients that represent my ‘ideal client’? Which type of clients would I like more of?” ACTION … Request the above clients complete a very brief survey to help you position yourself better in the marketplace. They will be honoured and happy to do so. After all, if they’re your favourite clients, you are likely their favourite practitioner (or store or consultant). They like and trust you and so would be pleased to help you and … they would be honest. The purpose of the survey is to find out what ‘value’ they, as a client, receive from time spent with you. The number of surveys completed is not nearly as important as the quality … 6-12 surveys should give you a good field of results. There are specific questions you can ask that will help your clients put this rather vague word (value) into context but this is a simpler method for most people to understand: Question to the client: “Take a moment to think of how you feel when you are in a session with your practitioner (or consultant, or in your favourite store). List 5 emotion words (peaceful, relieved …) and 5 value (spiritual, honoured, respected …) words that apply in this scenario.” Include the ‘meaning’ of the word value so they understand in what context you are applying it. Value val.ue n. 1. A principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable. Take a look at the photo … . Would your current business be represented best by the sea of red tulips or by the solitary yellow one? While the red tulips are each unique in their own way, with specific shapes and contours, heights and sizes to make each a little different … none is different enough to stand apart. There is nothing wrong with being a red tulip – if that is what you choose to be. Being the yellow tulip does not make you better (more wonderful or important, on a higher level of evolution) than any of the red tulips. Being yellow simply enhances and magnifies your uniqueness separate from the crowd, which in this case, are other businesses in the same field as you. So, you ask, “How can I become the yellow tulip?” There are many ways. We’ll go into several of them over the next few blogs. Be prepared. Some ideas may seem a little radical and are not your run-of-the mill typical advice. You did say you were interested in being the yellow tulip, didn’t you? If I asked you what you would advertise in your brochure to entice me to become your client, what would you say? Would you list all of your services, prices, benefits, some background on you, how long you’ve been in business, your credentials, your mission statement, company philosophy, contact information and possibly a few questions and answers? Most likely you would. After all, this is what everyone does! This is all most of us know. This is what we’ve been taught or emulate for a variety of reasons. Here is an easy, simple-to-apply suggestion: Do you know of a red tulip business that is doing particularly well? One you hear of more often than others? One that comes highly recommended? Perhaps, it’s the business you go to! Excellent. ACTION … Get a copy of their brochure. Study their advertising habits. Look at their ads closely. Check out their website. How is their business card designed? Do they offer something unique? Do they sponsor events? In each of these items, what draws you to them? Can you define ‘it’? How do the staff dress? How to they present themselves in public and in their business? What is their business like … product, colour, ambiance, location, décor, etc.? They are successful. It stands to reason that if you utilized some of the same concepts that draw you to them, that clients will be drawn to you as well. ACTION … get working on your brochures, business cards, advertising, update your website; rethink your wardrobe if need be; make some changes at your office/business. You’re off to a great start!
